Too much of alcohol intake has severe after effects at both physiological and psychological levels. This is called the hangover, usually experienced in the morning the night after heavy drinking. 

Many people experience hangover and certain symptoms of hangover like headache, nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness, vertigo etc. There might be various remedies for hangover which might not be very effective in relieving hangover. Following are few home remedies for hangover:



1. Eat First

The first remedy is to drink less and the second best of all the remedies is to eat first. When one eats well, the absorption of alcohol into the blood stream takes much time. This leads to a very small amount of alcohol to reach the brain.


2. Lemon

Lemons are rich in vitamin C. This increases the breakdown of alcohol inside the body itself thereby reducing the after effects such as dizziness, queasiness, muscle pain, sensitivity to light and sound. Lemons help control blood sugar levels as well.

1.  Add 2 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of honey to glass of warm water, mix it well. Drink this within 10-15 minutes wake up, and 2-3 times a day to get rid of hangover.

2.  Take 2 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice and mix it half teaspoon of black pepper powder and 2 tablespoon of honey in glass of warm water. Consume this mixture in the morning and 2 times a day.


3. Banana

Too much of alcohol drains the potassium content in one's body. Eating banana restores potassium and also replenishes the electrolytes lost from the body. Banana's potassium content and complex carbohydrates have rehydrating and coating effect on one's intestine respectively. This helps faster recovery from excess alcohol intake. Banana also boosts the energy levels and keeps one's stomach calm.



1.  Eat 1-2 ripe bananas in your breakfast to alleviate hangover symptoms.

2.  Consume banana smoothie or banana shakes; also add 2 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of honey to it. This will stable your blood sugar and it also prevents mood swings and tiredness.




4. Water 

Alcohol leads to dehydration and hence one has to drink lot of water or other oral rehydration liquids at regular intervals to rehydrate the body. Water also has the capability to dilute the impurities in one's stomach.

One should definitely drink eight - ten glasses of water in a day. They can also take oral rehydration fluids. Consuming plenty of water before sleeping in the night helps one to keep up with the hangover the next morning.


5. Eggs

One can opt for a meal of eggs in the morning after heavy alcohol night. Cysteine present in eggs has the capacity to break down alcohol thereby reducing its toxicity. Along with eggs one can choose to add banana in the breakfast for its potassium content which prevents dehydration and replenishes the electrolytes.

One can choose to have a breakfast of two - three pieces of toast and eggs in the morning after drinking alcohol. Before eating, they should drink a glass or two of water.


6. Ginger

Ginger tea relieves one from hangover. It can reduce even the head splitting headache which is a result of hangover. It aids alcohol digestion and also prevents stomach cramps owing to excess alcohol consumption. Ginger balances gastric juices and even soothes one's digestive tract.


 1.  Add 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger paste or smash 10 - 12 slices of fresh ginger root & add it to your regular or herbal tea. 

 2.  Boil 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger paste or juice in 3 cups of water for 5-7 minutes, strain the water and add 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice or orange juice, also add 2 tablespoon of honey to it. Drink this warm mixture in the morning and 2-3 times a day to get rid of hangover.  

 3.  Chew up small pieces of fresh ginger or ginger candy throughout the day to reduce feelings of vomiting and nausea due to hangover.

Note: But, do not consume ginger too much, as it can overstress the already delicate abdominal lining. 


7. Honey

Honey has higher level of sucrose which helps digest the excess alcohol in one's body thereby reducing hangover. How to consume honey during hangover:

1.  You can take three or four teaspoons of honey every hour up to the point where you feel the hangover reduce.


2.  Take a slice of dry toast or a piece of cracker and spread some honey over it. You can eat this as much as you want during hangover.

3.  Take one or two tablespoons of honey. Add it to a cup of water and consume this slowly at several times in a day.
