Why Sleeping on Your Right Side Could be Killing You
After a long
tiring day we all crave for the same thing. Sleep. Sleep is a necessary part of
our routine without which we will get sick.
Sleep is like a restart button for our body. We all sleep according to our comfort levels; our sleeping position is decided by what we feel comfortable in.
Some lie flat on back, some lie on belly and some sleep on our sides.
Now a little you may know that it is not advisable to sleep on your right side. If you prefer this side, it may be time for you to re-evaluate your choice because of the following reasons:

Now a little you may know that it is not advisable to sleep on your right side. If you prefer this side, it may be time for you to re-evaluate your choice because of the following reasons:
Numbness
If you are
habitual of sleeping on one side then you must have felt the numbness in your
arm when you wake up. You will notice a squished arm and numbness. You will not
feel your arm for some time. This happens because if you put your whole body
weight on one arm for a longer period of time like for hours then it restricts
the blood flow there.
You also
press down on your nerves, causing pins and needles or the “rubber arm.” This
may wake you up at night and some people are not lucky enough to get back to
sleep immediately. Therefore it can also lead to disrupted sleep or worse,
insomnia.
Though
sleeping on the right side is not completely a bane as it does help the heart
become healthier by lowering your heart rate as well as your blood pressure.
However – assuming that you are not pregnant – the best sleep position for
everyone is still sleeping on the back.
Precancerous
Because gastroesophageal
reflux (GERD) is bad for your oesophagus, the muscular end region right next to
your stomach could lead to cancer.
As sleeping
on right side may lead to disrupted or improper sleep there can be many side
effects of it. Some of them are listed below.
Serious conditions linked to poor
sleep include:
Heart disease
Irregular heartbeat
Risky for Pregnant Women
You all must
be thinking that how can we control our position when we are in deep sleep.
Well yeah, certain conditions cannot be controlled but, it not that big of a
problem to all either.
But it is definitely for pregnant women. Doctors tell expecting moms to avoid the right side for sleeping. There are quite a few reasons why, including:
But it is definitely for pregnant women. Doctors tell expecting moms to avoid the right side for sleeping. There are quite a few reasons why, including:
1. By
sleeping on just one side you are reducing the blood circulation to your unborn
baby. The blood flow should be even throughout.
2. Placenta
is where fetus stays and it has a very crucial role in the health and growth of
your baby, and some doctors say that sleeping on the right side harms your
placenta.
3. You also restrict the nutrients your baby can
get through the food you eat.
4. During
pregnancy you weigh more than usual as you also carry a baby inside you. And due to this
overweight sleeping on the right side for prolonged period of time can put a
lot of pressure on your liver which is also present on the right side of your
body. This can be detrimental to your health as liver is a very vital organ and
you may not wanna risk its health.
5. The most dreaded effect of sleeping on the right
side is that it increases the risk of stillbirth. This risk doubles during the
final semester, so avoid sleeping on your right as much as possible especially
in the final semester. Because you don’t want to mess with a life and death
situation.
