Why Does Period Blood Smell? Is that abnormal? Home remedies for Menstrual-Vaginal Odor
Oh god!! Why me!! This is the general thought which comes
to the mind of every woman when she goes through her monthly phase of periods.
These days often come along with immense pain through cramps, mood swings,
upset stomach, exertion, hunger related problems and the list goes on and on.
It is really brave of women to still stand and smile through all the pain and
make it look like yet another day.
To add on to this
difficulty level, there is this foul smell that comes from the blood. This
smell intensity varies from person to person but the woman who experience
strong foul odour, are at times embarrassed as even after all the attempts of
hiding, it is noticeable in the room they are in.
Has it?? I bet it has come to your mind that Why
does my period smell??
Isn’t this a question all the ladies have
wondered upon or asked to others at some point or another on their timeline??
Even though you are very conscious about your personal hygiene (to keep the
evidence in the dark!! Why should everyone know it??), it sometimes needs a
little more than the usual efforts to keep that quiet. I mean it is natural to
carry that smell. Honestly, you are not involved in any crime. But if the smell
causes you any discomfort (mental or physical) in any respect, it needs to be
controlled.
Why this happens?
Now all you ladies might be wondering why this smell and
why all this mess?? When you are on your period, the hormonal changes result in
rise of pH level of your blood, making it less acidic. Now this brings the
guard down and eventually results in increased bacterial growth and foul smell
down there. Adding on to the problems, the uterine lining also sheds during
this process which may result as an add-on to bacteria and fungus. If the blood
stays in the uterus for a longer time, there are chances that the smell will be
even stronger.
Lack of
moisture
During your period, vagina for all obvious reasons
retains moisture more than required and it may cause fungal infections at times
which results in fishy smell near the vaginal area. Another thing to bring to
your notice is that the prolonged blockage of air due to sanitary pads and
tampons are another culprit for bad odour. Pads specifically block the air to
the vaginal area and stop blood from drying which again causes bad odour from
the genitals.
Tampons
A single reason can easily be covered up but a
combination of these things can cause a strong odour which might be hard to
cover up for. Tampons on one hand prevent odour completely when inserted but on
the other hand, there is the perfect recipe inside for bacterial growth. And if
a tampon is forgotten, that might become an unpardonable mistake. Also,
abandoned tampon starts to smell foul. If you have a doubt about smell you can
check it for yourself by inserting your fingers into your vagina to see if you
feel anything. If you do, just remove it. No second thoughts.
Infections
If tampon is left inside, string broken or you are unsure
that anything is still inside, consult a doctor. He is the best person to solve
all your doubts and if condition arises he is the best person to remove it for
you. There are some common infections like trichomonas
infection, yeast infections, or cervix infections
which can also cause strong odour during menstrual
periods. If the infection is severe
then inflammation
and an abnormal discharge can also be a usual
accomplice of the demon.
Having said all these things over and over lets come to
the meat of the matter. Let's now find out
what can be done to get rid of this menace. Good personal hygiene can
never go out of fashion ladies!! Daily bathing, trimming of pubic hair and a
little extra care is what it takes to get rid of that smell.
