Why is it harmful to cook in Aluminium cookware?

Making right food choices are vital for our health. However, it has been observed that choosing the correct cookware is also very important. According to recent research studies, using aluminium cookware can add pollutants to our bodies. These cause various health hazards. Cooking meals in an aluminium utensil can add about 1-2 mg of aluminium to your foods. 

Aluminium utensils are used because they are cheap, rust-free, light-weight and easily available. Yet, when these aluminium utensils are used for a long time, these cause several health risks. Also, aluminium neutralises Vitamins and minerals present in the food.

Disease and Illness

Inhaling aluminium dust is more harmful than eating aluminium particles dissolved in foods. People working for a long time in an atmosphere contaminated with aluminium dust show poor health.

It has been reported that their chest X-rays show abnormality and they develop chronic coughs. Also, these people get kidney problems and others. Since their bodies have excess accumulated aluminium they get bone and/or brain disorders. Yet, there is not enough scientific evidence suggesting aluminium causes cancer.

Prevention

1.  You can minimize your intake of aluminium amounts into your body. You should avoid using aluminium utensils for cooking foods enriched in acids such as tomatoes. You should avoid storing leftover foods in containers made of aluminium.

2.  Also, you should not use aluminium foils to wrap hot foods. This is because hot and leftover foods tend to absorb small amounts of aluminium. Hence, you should stop using old aluminium cookware and start using other better alternatives.

Alzheimer's disease

Research study on influence of aluminium on Alzheimer’s disease has proved there is a direct connection. Observations show that people with Alzheimer’s disease have high content of aluminium in their diet. Also, high levels of aluminium concentrations were discovered in the brain of the Alzheimer’s patient.

What are the alternatives?

It would not be too difficult to replace your aluminium utensils in the kitchen. This is because there several substitutes of aluminium available in today’s market. These metallic substitutes include anodized aluminium, ceramic or glass, copper, iron, and stainless steel cookware.

Of these, copper and stainless steel might carry similar risks of metal transfer into foods. The most recommended material is anodized aluminium having the hard coating reducing dissolved aluminium in foods.
