8 Proven Ayurveda Remedies for Constipation


Constipation is one of the most common health issue these days. According to Ayurveda, constipation occurs when vata's dry and cold and qualities disturb the colon and obstructs its proper functioning. A day without proper bowel movement can be very disturbing and sometimes painful.

Some of the most common causes are over-eating, irregular eating habits, junk food consumption, alcohol drinking, too much tea or coffee and smoking. Most people affected by constipation feel bloated and uncomfortable with the inability to pass stool easily.

Ayurveda recommends safe and proven remedies to cure constipation and help make the bowel movement easy and uninterrupted. Though, it does not take away the fact that we should consume balanced diet and exercise regularly to retain the bowel movement smoothly working.

Here are 8 Ayurveda remedies that cure constipation:

1. Figs (Anjeer)

Soak a fig in glass of warm water and leave it overnight. Eat the figs and drink this water in the evening to cure constipation. Figs contains high amount of fibre. You can have figs daily in order to improve your digestion.

2. Follow Vata Dosha calming diet

One of the finest way to prevent constipation problem is to take vata balancing diet. Avoid cold drinks and foods, too much dried fruit, raw salads and most beans. Choose warm and well-cooked foods and warm drinks like water.

3. Triphala

Triphala is one of the most trusted and most effective remedy which helps cure constipation. Simply mix one-fourth teaspoon of Triphala powder with one fourth teaspoon of cardamom seeds powder and half teaspoon of coriander seeds powder.

Add this mixture to half glass of warm water, mix well and drink it. Triphala contains glycoside which has laxative properties. Coriander and Cardamom seeds help relieve indigestion and flatulence.

4. Roasted Fennel

Consume teaspoon of roasted fennel seeds with glass of warm water at bedtime, it will work as a mild laxative. The volatile oil present in fennel seeds improves digestion by promoting production of gastric enzymes.

5. Milk and Ghee

Mix 1-2 teaspoons of pure ghee in a cup of hot milk and drink it before going to bed. It is an effective remedy of relieving constipation. This mixture is especially good for vata and pitta.

6. Liquorice Root

Add a teaspoon of liquorice root / mulethi powder with a teaspoon of jaggery and drink it with cup of warm water. Mulethi improves bowel activity. But, it is advisable to consult an ayurvedic expert before taking it on regular basis.

7. China Grass

China grass (agar-agar) is a dried seaweed, which is when cut into bits and cooked in milk, becomes a gelatinous substance.

8. Bael Fruit pulp

Mix 2 tablespoon of bael fruit pulp with one tablespoon of jaggery and consume it 45 minutes before your dinner to cure constipation. Follow this remedy 3-4 days.

You can also drink cup of bael sharbat along with 2 tablespoon of tamarind water and one tablespoon of jaggery added in it.

1.  Drink more than 3 to 5 glasses of clean water in the morning. You can have herbal drinks like green tea, chamomile tea, orange juice etc. that can help strengthen your digestion.
2.  Increase fibre-rich food in your daily diet.
3.  Exercise regularly for 30 minutes to kick-start your digestion.
4.  Add lots of seasonal fruits and vegetables in your diet.
