Arthritis & Joint Pain - 13 Best Natural Home Remedies for Arthritis & Joint Pain


1. Turmeric

Arthritis could cause joint pain. If that is the case, turmeric is the best home remedy. Turmeric contains a component called curcumin which has the capacity to ease pain phenomenally. Turmeric heals better than other anti inflammatory drugs (non-steroidal) which are used to treat post surgery inflammation. Hence if a person is suffering from rheumatoid and osteoarthritis they could make use of turmeric to ease inflammation and rigidity in the joints.


 1.  Add one teaspoon of turmeric powder and 1 tablespoon of honey in half glass of warm milk, Mix it well and drink it every day for 2 weeks regularly.

 2.  Take some fresh turmeric and ginger roots. Wash them properly under water. Peel the turmeric and ginger roots and cut them in very small pieces. Boil these pieces in a glass of water for 8-10 minutes; you can also add 4-5 fresh mint leaves to this boiling water to improve the taste. Strain this water and add 1 tablespoon of honey to it. Drink this water once a day for 2 weeks. You can use turmeric powder and ginger paste or powder instead of roots.

3.  Alternatively you can take turmeric capsules (250 to 500 mg) two three times a day, until you see the result.

Note: Turmeric powder or roots may interfere with certain medicines, like blood thinners and other such medicines, and this may aggravate your gallbladder problems.


2. Garlic

Sulphur is an important component that helps in shielding, refreshing and strengthening the bones in one’s body. The cartilages and connective tissues also get several benefits from sulphur compounds. In order to get benefits from sulphur, one should include diet that is rich in sulphur. Sulphur rich foods include garlic, onions, oats, corn, seeds, asparagus, watermelon and avocado.



1.  Crush 5-6 garlic cloves and fry them in three tablespoons of mustard oil or sesame oil. When the garlic cloves turn dark brown, remove the oil from the heat and strain the oil properly. Apply this warm oil around affected area and gently message for few minutes, leave it on for 2-3 hours and then rinse it off with warm water. Repeat this twice a day for fast relief.

2.  Crush two or three garlic cloves and consume them with warm water in the morning on an empty stomach. Repeat this daily for 2-3 weeks.

3. Flaxseed oil

Flaxseed oil has the capability to alleviate symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. It also aids in lubricating the joints and decreasing the stiffness in joints and even eases joint pain. This oil is rich in alpha-linolenic acid “ALA”. This ALA could be converted to EPA and DHA - the active ingredients that are present in fish oil. 

Being an omega-3 essential fatty acid, ALA is critical for preserving the cell structure as well as functioning of one’s joints. Flaxseed oil also is rich in potassium, magnesium, vitamins B, zinc and protein - which are have significant capability to reduce pain and inflammation.

1.  Mix 2 tablespoon of Flaxseed oil in glass of carrot or apple juice and 1 tablespoon of honey. Drink this once or twice a day for 2-3 weeks to see visible results.


2.  Chop 1-2 fully ripe bananas and add it into bowl of curd, add 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 tablespoon of flaxseed oil in it. Mix them well and consume it in your breakfast. Repeat this two three times a day. 

3.  Add flaxseed oil in your regular diet. Consumption of two- three tablespoon oil daily is better for fast pain relief within 2-3 weeks.

Precaution: If someone taking medicines such as blood thinners and cholesterol lowering medicines, then please consult your doctors first, as flaxseed may cause breathing problems, stomach discomforts or rashes.



4. Heat Therapy

Similar to cold compress, heat or steam therapy would also aid in easing knee pain.

1.  Sit in a steamy bathtub for around 10 - 15 minutes. Your knees should be well immersed in the water. This will definitely help in decreasing knee pain significantly.

2.  Alternatively, you can even apply a hot water bag on top of the area that is affected for five to ten minutes. This should be repeated for at least three or four times every day to ease the pain.


5. Hot and Cold Compresses

Alternating between a hot and a cold compress could relieve one from joint pains. Heat treatment decreases the pain, enhances blood flow and also calms down the sore muscles and joints. Cold therapy eases the inflammation and gives a numb feeling in the areas surrounding the affected joint.

1.      Wrap up both the compresses in two different towels before starting the therapy. The compresses should not be applied to the skin directly.
2.      Set the hot compress on the area that is affected for around three minutes.
3.      Now, remove it and without delay keep the cold compress on the same area for a minute.
4.      This process should be repeated for about 15 - 20 minutes, few times every day until you feel the relief.



6. Almond & Turmeric

1.  Take 3 almonds and 2-3 walnuts; grind them to make fine powder of it. Mix this powder with glass of milk and also add half teaspoon of turmeric powder in it. Mix it well.

2.  Boil this milk for ten minutes on slow flame. Drink it once a day for 2-3 weeks regularly for fast pin relief naturally.
