50 Effective Home Remedies for Toothache & Gum Problems - Quick Pain Relief


Tip - Do not swallow the below liquids or medicines. Wash your mouth thoroughly and spit these liquids out when done. Apply the below natural remedies directly to the problem tooth and its surrounding gums unless otherwise directed.

Causes of a toothache

1.        Tooth decay or cavities
2.        Exposed tooth roots
3.        Gum disease (tissue inflammation/infection)
4.        Cracked or broken tooth
5.        Impacted teeth
6.        Emergence of wisdom teeth
7.        Tooth infection
8.        Abscessed tooth (a painful infection in the gums or the root of the tooth)
9.        Swelling of the pulp
10.     Excessive consumption of soft drinks
11.     Spasms of the muscles
12.     Irritation of the tooth pulp, following dental treatment
13.     Too much consumption of refined carbohydrates and sugar
14.     Ulceration of the gums (acute ulcerative gingivitis).

1. Cloves

Cloves has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anesthetic & antioxidant properties which help lessen infection and toothache.


     1.    Apply some clove oil directly on your affected tooth. Clove oil has outstanding bacteria killing properties and it also gives freezing effect to your tooth, that is why it’s a well known & tested traditional home remedy for toothache. The extract called eugenol in the clove bud is act as painkiller. The clove oil may sting at first, but then peaceful relief sets in.

     2.    You can have the same freezing effect from whole cloves. Put 1-2 cloves in your mouth, let them wet until they soften, then hold these softened cloves on the painful tooth to release their oil for up to half an hour.


2. Olive oil with Clove

Make a smooth and thick paste of 2 ground Cloves and add half teaspoon of olive oil in it. Roll a clean small ball of cotton into adequate paste to soak it and keep on the affected tooth.


3. Ginger

Take 1-2 teaspoon of powder ginger or fresh ginger paste, add 1 teaspoon of red (cayenne) pepper in it. Add both of them in some water to make thicker paste. You can add Eucalyptus oil or honey instead of water. Roll a clean small ball of cotton into adequate paste to soak it, and place this cotton ball on the painful tooth. 

Remember - This mixture can irritate the gums, so keep this cotton ball on the tooth or between the teeth. Moreover, using these kitchen spices together, you can apply them separately. Either one can help to reduce tooth pain. 



4. Garlic

Garlic has antibiotic and many medicinal properties which are very helpful in slowing down bacterial effects and tooth pain.

Crush 2-3 garlic cloves and make smooth paste of it, add 2 pinches of table salt or black salt and make thick paste of it. Apply this paste directly on the affected tooth to lessen the tooth pain or roll over cotton ball in this paste and put on the tooth. You can also chew 1-2 cloves of garlic to get quick relief. 



5. Onion

Onions contains antiseptic and antimicrobial properties that can control the swelling and toothache. Onion provides relief from pain by killing the germs which cause an infection.

1.    Chew small piece of raw onion for a few minutes to reduce the tooth pain.
2.    Or put small piece of raw onion directly on the affected tooth or gum.



6. Tincture of myrrh

Wash your mouth with a ‘tincture of myrrh’. The astringent effects help with swelling & inflammation, and myrrh also gives the benefit of bacteria killing. 

1.    Boil 1 teaspoon of myrrh powder in 2 cups water for 30 minutes on slow flame. Strain the water and let it cool. Wash your mouth with this water 5-6 times a day to get relief from toothache. Myrrh is a traditional medicine related to the mouth issues such as gum problems, toothache, sore throat etc.

2.    Tincture of myrrh may be applied directly to affected tooth and gums. For sore throat dilute 1 teaspoon of myrrh powder in the water and used as a gargle.



7. Guava Leaves

Fresh guava leaves are also very effective in alleviation of toothache.

     1.    Simply chew 1-2 fresh guava leaves for few minutes let the juice from leaves start functioning on your affected tooth. Do this for 15 minutes and then spit off, don’t swallow.

     2.    Boil 6-7 guava leaves in 4 cups of water on slow flame for 15 minutes. Let the water to cool to a warm temperature, and then add ½ teaspoon of salt or 1 tablespoon of honey in it. Use this mixture as a mouthwash for quick pain relief.
 

8. Peppermint tea

Peppermint tea has a pleasant flavour and some freezing power. Put 1-2 teaspoons of dried peppermint leaves in 2 cup of boiling water for 15-20 minutes. Let it cool, and then swish it around in your mouth for few minutes, then spit it out. Repeat this as often as required.



9. Hydrogen peroxide

Roll a clean small ball of cotton into adequate hydrogen peroxide solution and place this cotton ball on the painful tooth. Do not swallow it, a hydrogen peroxide solution is only for rinsing the tooth. Spit it out afterward and was your mouth several times with clean water.


10. Asafetida/Hing

Asafetida/hing is very awesome Indian spice which is very helpful in dental issues such as toothaches and bleeding gums.

Add ½ teaspoon of asafetida powder to 2 tablespoon of lemon juice or honey. Roll over small cotton ball in this mixture and put on the affected area. Asafetida/hing gives quick relief from the pain.

29. Cough syrup

Lozenges or cough drops usually contain a tiny amount of anesthetic such as menthol and sometimes benzocaine, that is why they may alleviate tooth pain.

     1.    Dip small cotton ball in cough syrup and hold it on painful area.


30. Vick’s VapoRub

Apply some Vick’s VapoRub over the outside of your cheek where tooth hurts, then place a paper napkin on your pillow and lie down on that side for few minutes. You will feel better.


31. Plantain

Chew up 1-2 fresh plantain leaves. If your affected side is too painful to chew, use the other side of your mouth to chew it. Once the leaves are macerated a bit apply it to the painful area and hold in place.


32. Almond Extract

Soak a small cotton ball with Almond extract and hold in affected region.


34. Cucumber

1.    Take fresh cucumbers slice and keep it in refrigerator for 1 hour and then hold it over the painful area.
2.    Alternatively, prepare some cucumber paste and mix it with little salt and turmeric. Pack this mixture around the painful tooth.



35. Gooseberry

The vitamin C in Indian gooseberry not only prevents tooth decay and bleeding gums but also helps in reducing toothache. Caries and even loose tooth can be cured by Gooseberry/Amla treatment.

Simply put some Indian gooseberry paste mixed with pinch of salt on affected tooth.


36. Black Pepper

Apply black pepper powder mixed with salt and turmeric. Do this several times a day to reduce toothache.


37. Rosebay

Chew the root of the rosebay to reduce toothache in few minutes.


38. Black Seed Oil

1.    Black Seed Oil is very effective in treating toothaches. To alleviate the pain and discomfort, simply soak cotton ball in black seed oil and put it on the affected gum and tooth, repeat this several times.

2.    You can also add half teaspoon of Black Seed Oil in a glass of warm water, and rinse/gargle with this warm mixture.



39. Cabbage

Soften a green cabbage leaf with a bottle or rolling pin and cut out the veins. Roll up and place it between tooth and cheek. Application of cabbage leaf is powerful detoxifiers and healers.



40. Spinach Leaves

Raw spinach leaves will give you similar effect like the guava leaves. Simply chew few raw spinach leaves on the aching tooth or make a paste adding little honey and press against the affected tooth.


41. Blackcurrant leaf

Boil handful of blackcurrant leaves in glass of water for 10-15 minutes, strain the water. Add half teaspoon of salt and little turmeric to this warm water and use it as mouthwash for toothache. You can also gargle to cure sore throat and hoarseness.


42. Grapefruit seed extract

Dip clean cotton in grapefruit seed extract and hold it over affected area. grapefruit seed extract eliminates bacteria associated with tooth pain and infections.



43. Turmeric

Turmeric is not only fighting against cancer, Alzheimer's and other diseases, but also gives you relief in toothache. It also fights gum and tooth infections as well as abscesses. Make some turmeric paste using water or raw honey and put in on the painful area with the help of cotton ball.




44. Brandy or whiskey

Soak a cotton ball in brandy and place it over the affected tooth to get rid of toothache.




45. Mustard oil

Mix half teaspoon of mustard oil with some salt and soak a cotton ball in it. Place the cotton over painful tooth to reduce discomfort.
This remedy will give you relief from toothache, and also make your gums and jaws strong.


47. Primrose oil

Primrose oil also helps relieve toothache in few minutes. Simply put cotton ball soaked in Primrose oil on painful tooth.

48. Mango leaves & mango flowers

Take 4-5 mango leaves and burn it make powder. Add some salt and turmeric in this powder and use it as tooth powder or place it on painful region using some water.



49. Wet teabag

Place wet teabag on affected area and suck on it (try to use eucalyptus or peppermint tea bag). Placing wet tea bag between affected tooth and gum is a very effective for a dental abscess.
